Frequently asked questions
Who are Richfords?
We are top-class restoration specialists. Our BDMA-trained technicians are experts in getting your
property back to normal following fire, water damage or accidental. We’re industry leaders, with a
long-standing reputation for excellence, and we’re the first choice for many of the UK’s major insurance
companies when their customers need support after a disaster.
We work on premium and specialist properties, from residential to large commercial offices, factories to Grade Listed buildings, and restore high-net-worth contents and possessions.
Do you work with all insurers?
Yes! We’re happy to work with all UK-based insurers. When our technicians conduct a site visit, we’ll complete a survey and report, which we will send to your insurer so they know the scope of the work that’s required and the estimated cost.
When you sign our Policy Assignment Mandate, we will deal directly with your insurer, saving you the hassle of managing the claim yourself.
My insurer says I have to use their preferred supplier, Can I still use Richfords?
When you make a claim, your insurer is likely to offer you the expertise of their preferred suppliers. However, it’s important to remember that it is your home or business that has been affected; therefore it’s your choice who carries out the work.
We work with all UK-based insurers. If you need any advice or would like us to carry out your work, call us on 01209 722522. If you insurer asks to see estimated costs before we start work, we can produce an itemised report to clarify our approach.
What can I expect when I call Richfords?
When you call us, one of our claims handlers will immediately get to work to understand the damage you’ve suffered. Once we fully understand your needs, we’ll arrange a convenient time for a technician to visit your property, assess the damage in person and carry out emergency stabilisation work. This may include water extraction, air purification, contents cleaning or waste removal to prevent secondary damage.
Once initial remediation is underway, we’ll create a scope of works for ongoing recovery management and keep you informed every step of the way as we get you back to normal.
What happens after the technician has made the first visit?
After our first visit, we’ll use our site survey to create a quote, which we’ll send to your insurance company. Our claims team will arrange for technicians to return to your property and begin the next phase of recovery, which may include installing additional drying equipment, removing soot residues or restoring furniture.
What is a Policy Assignment Mandate?
Our Policy Assignment Mandate is a form that we ask you to sign when we first come to your property. It has three functions:
- It gives us the go-ahead to carry out restoration work on your property.
- It gives us and your insurer permission to discuss your claim, under data protection regulations.
- It instructs your insurer to pay us directly, so you don’t have to worry about claiming the money back.

How long will the drying take?
The amount of time it takes a property to dry after water damage depends on:
- The amount of water
- The dwell time of the water and how long it was in the property
- The construction/fabric of the building
- The drying method used.
For example, a few litres of water that escape from a pipe into a brick building will dry out much more quickly than a two-foot flood affecting a timber frame property.
Our technicians will use remote monitoring systems to take regular moisture readings and let you know how the drying is progressing.
Can you help find my burst pipe?
Yes, our leak detection service allows us to locate the source if you are experiencing an escape of water from an unknown area. We’ll quickly find burst pipes or leaks causing damp and moisture.
Who pays for the electricity your equipment uses?
If we’re working as part of an insurance claim, your insurer will cover all the running costs of any equipment we install.
