BBC Report – Warming could raise UK flood damage bill by 20%

As a flood damage restoration company, Richfords know all too well the devastating impact flooding can have on communities. That’s why we were interested in reading the BBC Aritcle about the new “future flood map” of Britain produced by Bristol University and Fathom researchers. The map simulates the impact of flooding in the coming decades, taking into account the effects of climate change. It shows that annual damage caused by flooding could increase by more than a fifth in today’s terms over the next century, with “hotspots”, particularly at risk.

The map also reveals locations that will be largely unaffected by flooding, which is critical information for planning decisions. This data may also feed into future decisions around the cover offered by reinsurance pools like Flood Re

While the annual cost of flood damage across the UK is currently £700m, this new research shows that the cost could increase significantly in the coming decades. As experts in dealing with the aftermath of flooding, we encourage everyone to ensure that they have adequate flood insurance in place to protect their property and possessions.
